Can't Miss Radio Show!

Transform Lexington is hosting

a Special Edition Radio Show

on Tuesday, October 14, at 2:00 PM!

Barry McNees, visionary developer of the Distillery District, and Harold Tate of Lexington's

Downtown Development Authority, will join us to enlighten the city on Lex's two transformative projects (including the Centrepoint project).

Harold will help folks understand TIF even better, and we will highlight the vast differences between the two major projects. For those who want to discover more about the Distillery District, Barry will explain everything there is to know!

Interesting Tidbits

LFUCG has a general service revenue stream of about $275M, of which 83% comes directly from the local payroll tax. (You pay 2.25% of every dollar earned to LFUCG. 2.75% if you live in Fayette County.)

Hence, the more high-paying, global jobs we have, the better our city is, plain and simple.

Currently, our biggest employing segments are education (UK, EKU, Transy, Georgetown, FCPS) and health care (our three hospitals). But almost all of that money is internally generated, from Kentucky's own people. That means the salaries are limited, and when salaries are limited, city revenues are limited, which means fewer bike lanes, trailways, great parks, events, etc...

Yet Lexington has historically discouraged our highest earners and most creative residents - our innovators, entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, leaders and artists - from living here, silently watching them leave for other cities and (higher ranked) universities around the world.

I, Eric Patrick Marr, was born and raised in Lexington, but after Tates Creek, like a great many of my peers, pursued larger educational and professional opportunities than Lexington and our Commonwealth could provide.

And many of my friends have never returned, preferring their high salaries and global professional opportunities over the Bluegrass and our Thoroughbreds.

Having returned after 16 years in Ann Arbor, Naples and Chicago, I have reacquainted myself with the oft-uninviting, dull, sometimes lifeless economy, culture and social "vibe" of our region.

To be honest, as a native Wildcat, it's long broken my heart that our Lexington has been allowed to remain stagnant, while the rest of the country, and world, have progressed so far beyond us, in some fundamental areas.

I don't have all the answers yet - nor do I expect to have all of them. I believe in one thing, however - I believe in the immense greatness of our people, and that ALL OF US, collectively, do indeed have a ton of transformational solutions!

Kentucky's brand, nationwide, as you know, is not one of "Creative Genius." Yet Lexington, Kentucky USA raises some of the greatest hearts and minds on the planet. We simply cost ourselves a mega-fortune by not engaging and employing our own greatness, by disengaging our own resources, by not connecting.

I believe our outdated governmental system needs to transform. I believe our economy needs to transform. And mostly, I believe "the way we do things" (what I call our "cultural environment") needs to transform.

We have historically had entirely too much greatness to not lead the world in today's global knowledge age.
